Hugh Jackman struggles with ninja and eternal life in new ‘The Wolverine’ trailer

We’ve been seeing more and more of Hugh Jackman in “The Wolverine” over the last few days, and now 20th Century Fox has finally unleashed the first full-length trailer for James Mangold’s take on the X-Men hero, based on the celebrated comic book arc by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.

After getting in a bar brawl somewhere in Canada, a bearded Logan heads to Japan at the behest of an aging businessman he saved in WWII. There, he meets a new love, fights some ninja in the snow, appears to lose his healing powers, fights another guy in an iffy-looking high speed train sequence, and is told “Eternity can be a curse…”

As previously revealed, we even get a quick glimpse of Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), who had apparently died in “X-Men: The Last Stand.” Is it part of a flashback or a vision? Or is she genuinely back from the dead (again)?

It doesn’t appear to be quite as gritty as fans were led to believe, but it certainly looks more cohesive and inspired than 2009’s lackluster “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

The sequel also stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima.

“The Wolverine” opens July 26.
