‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2’ trailer reminds us Katniss sacrificed herself for love

Before Gale, before Peeta, there was Prim. Everything Katniss Everdeen has done has been for love of her sister. The latest trailer for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” focuses on familial love is the heart of this series.

Warning: You might tear up a bit.

One of my favorite things about this franchise is how the marketing people stay in character. Every trailer, every poster, every snippet on social media is told from the perspective of propaganda; either from the Capitol or from District 13. The press release that accompanied the latest trailer is no different. Well played, President Coin?

“To honor the strong bond and compassion between two of the most courageous sisters we know – Katniss and Primrose Everdeen – we present a brand new poster and moving tribute of Katniss” sacrifices for her sister throughout THE HUNGER GAMES series. Raise your 3-Finger Salute and experience some of the powerful moments these two sisters have endured throughout their fight against the Capitol.”

A new poster for “Mockingjay Part 2” was also released today. It shows Katniss in blood-red armor – assumedly so the enemy can”t see her bleed – staring into the distance with gossamer clouds of a new dawn behind her.

The phrase “A creature as unquenchable as the sun” blazoned across the top of the poster and the words “Her sacrifice is the ultimate tribute” ringing from the trailer are all the more uncomfortable since we the audience know how Katniss feels about her role in this war. Combined with the blood imagery and her serene face, it”s almost as if District 13 is trying to set the stage for a martyr.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” hits theaters on November 20, 2015.
