Watch: Ian Somerhalder of ‘Vampire Diaries’ talks his bad boy return

SAN DIEGO — For “The Vampire Diaries” fans who love to see Ian Somerhalder’s Damon at his worst: you may be in for a treat for Season 4.

His character spent seasons 2 and 3 trying to be someone he’s not for everybody else. After a challenging love trangle and rivalry galore, “It didn’t work. And they were wrong. This year, [Damon] is saying, ‘This is who I am, this is what I am, and if you don’t like it, screw you,'” Somerhalder told HitFix as he promoted the new season at Comic-Con this year.

Feisty! How exactly will Damon’s true self-expression manifest toward Elena (Nina Dobrev), who made her very dramatic change in the finale last season?

“It’s gonna open up a lot of options that are going to allow these two characters to explore one another and this world around them,” Somerholder said. “He’s gonna understand her a lot more. He’s gonna ultimately, for once, really understand what she’s going through… actually be able to help her along. Elena is a very stable very solid human being, but who’s to say what’s gonna happen when all of these emotions are amplified a thousand fold, ten thousand fold?… The ability that Damon and Elena have to forge a new relationship… is all up in the air. Which is cool.”
