There”s been a trend lately where popular franchises from the childhood of yesteryear are repurposed for a now adult audience that have children of their own. The most visible of these are Jeffrey Brown“s fantastic tales of Darth Vader just doing normal dad stuff with a young Leia and Luke. The classic “Goodnight Moon” got a 21st century update. Cthulhu also has an oddly healthy children”s book genre. But what all those books are missing is actual advice and/or life lesson.
Enter “Pooping is Logical.”
The brainchild of screenwriter Gary Whitta (“Book of Eli,” first draft of “Star Wars: Rogue One”) and his wife Leah, “Pooping is Logical” would be exactly what it says on the tin: a Vulcan-themed potty-training guide.
Working on this idea with my wife has been a really great collaboration. I”m a Star Trek obsessive and she”s a trained childcare professional who looked after other families” toddlers for years before we had our own. So we were both able to bring a bit of our own expertise to it. POOPING IS LOGICAL! tells the story of a young Vulcan child who, just like kids on Earth, is hesitant to make the leap out of diapers and onto the potty. Fortunately his parents, who are wise and loving, are on hand to help him through this transition and assure him that pooping on the potty is a perfectly natural, safe, and grown-up thing to do. In a society based on logic, what could be more logical than pooping?
Whitta has even secured an artist for the book. Michael Krahulik of “Penny Arcade” is on board. There”s only one problem. They can”t get publishers to take them seriously. It seems the idea of Vulcan bodily functions is beyond the pale. But the Whittas” will soldier on. After all, someone signed off on “A Very Klingon Christmas,” so hope springs eternal.
