Lil Wayne gets bragging rights for the top-selling CD in the U.S. released in 2008. “Tha Carter III,’ sold more than 2.8 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Final figures won’t be in until Wednesday, but it has a big enough lead over the No. 2 album, Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida,” which has sold slightly over 2 million, that no one can catch it.
“Tha Carter lll” also earns the distinction of being the only album released in 2008 to sell more than one million copies its first week of release. (This is a far cry from less than a decade ago when five albums sold more than a million in their first week). How we long for the good old days!
Across the pond, Duffy takes home honors for the best-selling album of the year in the U.K., according to Billboard. “Rockferry” sold 1.68 million copies in England, as tabulated by the Official Charts Company.
In both the U.S. and U.K., the top-selling theatrical soundtrack belonged to “Mamma Mia.” It was the only movie soundtrack in both countries to sell more than one million copies– although the soundtrack to “Twilight” is fast approaching the million mark in the U.S.
