The world of the “Amazing Spider-Man” film franchise is one of secrets. The first film gave us an introduction into the sort of research Peter Parker”s father was doing and the second film expands upon it. It also offers up a whole lot of hints about the direction in which the franchise (and its spinoffs) is going to head, something which Drew McWeeny notes in his review. Because of all these secrets, all these soon-to-be explored facets, I spent a significant portion of the time during my interview with Marc Webb asking about them.
Webb told me that he did know from the beginning about all the things going on in OsCorp, and that he also had Peter”s parents” backstory worked out. He also knows, moving forward, “the broad strokes,” of Spider-Man as a character, “and what his challenges will be, in the abstract sense.” But, as for how the “Venom” and “Sinister Six” film fit in and what the whole universe looks like, Webb has “some idea” and cautioned “we”re still building it out,” but that “the bones are in place.”
Do not think though that the entire time in the interview is spent talking about other movies – “Amazing Spider-Man 2” is a much bigger movie than the first one in the series and I opened the discussion asking about that. In terms of the differences, one of the fascinating things Webb said is that he “Had a lot more fun making this movie” as he faced the challenge of giving this one a larger scope and sense of spectacle. He also discussed a change in editing style and shot length; definitely watch and hear his explanation of that difference.
