Dennis Quaid is expected to play Bill Clinton, with Julianne Moore as Hillary Clinton in HBO’s telefilm “The Special Relationship.”

“The Special Relationship” would be Peter Morgan’s third film about former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, with Michael Sheen taking his third turn as Blair. As one might expect from the title, the film would look at Blair’s “special relationship” with the Clintons.

Stephen Frears directed Morgan’s first two Blair projects, 2003’s “The Deal” and 2006’s “The Queen.” It’s expected that Morgan, a recent Oscar nominee for his “Frost/Nixon” script, would make his directing debut on the project.

“The Special Relationship” has yet to be formally greenlit, though Kathleen Kennedy, Morgan and Andy Harries would executive produce and the BBC is in talks to co-produce with HBO.

Variety credits “several websites” with breaking the news on Tuesday, but offers no clarification on which websites those might be. Quaid and Moore’s casting had, indeed, been rumored, but HBO’s involvement in the project appears to be new.

Quaid was most recently seen in 2008’s “Vantage Point,” “Smart People” and “The Express.”

A few people saw Moore, a four-time Oscar nominee, in last fall’s “Blindness.”
