Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce face a bleak future in trailer for ‘The Rover’

There was slight disappointment for those awaiting “Animal Kingdom” director David Michôd's buzzy post-apocalyptic revenge thriller “The Rover” this morning — it didn't nab a slot in the Cannes Competition. Nevertheless, it will premiere at the festival in the Midnight Screenings section, and if this stark, moody and decidedly unsettling first trailer is anything to go by, that might be the right place for it.

We've now had glimpses of both Cannes entries starring Robert Pattinson — the other being David Cronenberg's Competition entry “Maps to the Stars” — and this looks the grabbier one. That said, this looks like a most impressive showcase for Guy Pearce, playing a man hunting down the gang who stole his car in the Australian Outback. Michôd doesn't appear to have lost the brutal command of atmosphere, balancing latent and not-so-latent violence,  that he wielded in his debut — count me very excited for this indeed.

You won't have long to wait for it after its Cannes premiere, either — a24 release the film on June 13. Check out the trailer above and tell us what you think.
