A Los Angeles jury decided today (March 10) that Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams' hit song “Blurred Lines” did too much dancing on the blurry lines of copyright.
The Marvin Gaye estate will take home a damages to the tune of $7.2 million, over the contention that “Blurred Lines” sounded too much like Gaye's jam “Got To Give It Up.”
Co-writers Williams and Thicke and the song's rap guest T.I. have released a statement in reaction to the ruling, hinting that the party ain't over yet:
While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward. Blurred Lines was created from the heart and minds of Pharrell, Robin and T.I. and not taken from anyone or anywhere else. We are reviewing the decision, considering our options and you will hear more from us soon about this matter.
