‘Seventh Son’ Super Bowl ad combats generic tone with unique mythical creatures

It”s been a long time coming, but “Seventh Son” is finally leaving development purgatory. This February, Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore will go head-to-head with “Jupiter Ascending” for the eyes and wallets of sci-fi fans. Check out the latest TV spot for “Seventh Son,” which aired during Super Bowl XLIX.

Despite not being about wizards, and the seventh son of a seventh son actually being a daughter but misgendered due to a comedy of errors (Discworld is ripe for the picking, Hollywood), this movie is at least trying to put a new spin on an old tale.

We”ve got your standard “war is coming” but the creatures are less Tolkien and more “randomly selected creatures from a mythology encyclopedia.” More variety of magical monsters is always a plus in my book.

Also, thanks to “Guardians of the Galaxy,” I”ll spend this entire film waiting for actor Djimon Hounsou to question who Star-Lord is.

“Seventh Son” is in theaters on February 6, 2015.
