Sofia Vergara urges critics of her Emmys turntable gag to ‘lighten up’

One of the odder moments of Monday (August 25) night's Emmy Awards telecast found “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara spinning on a turntable for the approval of Television Academy Chairman & CEO Bruce Rosenblum.

The punchline of the bit, with Rosenblum blathering and Vergara showing off her curves for the audience, is that if you give people something they want to see, they'll watch TV.

Well, some viewers didn't take Vergara's objectification all that kindly, even though the “Modern Family” actress has never been shy about showcasing and discussing her body. You'll notice the moment featured as a Worst in our Best & Worst gallery.

After the show, however, Vergara laughed at accusations of sexism.

“I think it's absolutely the opposite,” Vergara said backstage after the fifth consecutive “Modern Family” win for Outstanding Comedy Series. “It means that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself and enjoy and work and make money. So I absolutely think it's ridiculous.”

Vergara said she knew who started the kerfuffle and that that person should “lighten up a little bit.”
