Star Trek Beyond Will Premiere in IMAX at San Diego Comic-Con Fan Event

Taking a page out of Lucasfilm's book, Paramount is planning an enormous fan event for Star Trek Beyond at San Diego Comic-Con this July. The film will have its world premiere there in IMAX.

You may recall Star Wars: The Force Awakens making a big splash at SDCC last year. After a hugely exciting panel in Hall H, director J.J. Abrams shocked the room by telling them they could all follow him and the cast outside for a free concert. Oh yeah, fans got free lightsabers too and it ended in a big fireworks show.

Everyone who was there announced it as one of the most magical and emotional events of their lives, not to mention a highlight of SDCC, and they didn't even show the movie. It was just a really well-planned fan event.

During another big fan event last Friday, it seemed as if Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin was ready to one-up Lucasfilm. While the new trailer had just debuted, Lin told the crowd “We”re partnering with Comic-Con and are going to do our premiere in San Diego…I believe it's going to be the first time ever IMAX outdoors. We”ll have a full orchestra.”

The premiere will be taking place Wednesday, July 20th, preview night of SDCC. To which I say, get in line now.

Fortunately Abrams, who was also at the Trek event, let those in attendance know they'd be getting special credentials to attend. Of course, they'll have to get themselves to San Diego first, which not every fan can afford to do. For everyone else, here's what Comic-Con.org tells us:

The first big event to be announced for this year”s Comic-Con International is literally out of this world! Star Trek Beyond, the next installment in the Star Trek franchise will have its exclusive red carpet World Premiere at Comic-Con on Wednesday, July 20, at the Embarcadero Marina Park. Plus it will be shown in the immersive IMAX® format!

As a special event for this year's Comic-Con attendees, a limited number of fans will have the chance to attend this special screening. Details about ticket distribution will be announced prior to the 2016 convention.

This first-ever outdoor IMAX premiere event will include appearances by the film”s cast and crew, and a live concert performance by the San Diego symphony orchestra.

Will it be as big a hit as the Star Wars concert? I'm guessing not (and that's coming from a big Trekker). I can only speak for myself of course but the rebooted Star Trek just doesn't hold the same emotional weight as Star Wars.

Are you going to SDCC this year? Will you attempt to get into the Star Trek Beyond premiere?
