‘Supergirl’ continues its streak of female casting, adds Silver Banshee to the roster

The hits just keep coming for Kara as “Supergirl” introduces a new nemesis in episode #14 that will not only flummox the last daughter of Krypton, but Cat Grant”s assistant as well. Italia Ricci (“Chasing Life”) has just been confirmed to be joining the show in a recurring role as Siobhan Smythe, better known as the Silver Banshee.

Some quick background: Silver Banshee began as a Superman villain in 1987 as the daughter of a Gaelic clan that dealt in magic rituals. Deemed unworthy to lead Clan McDougal in the wake of her father”s death due to her gender, Siobhan went through with the ritual anyway. Interrupted by her brother, things went awry and the Silver Banshee was born.

Siobhan got tied up with Superman when her quest to be free of the Netherworld led her on a search for her father”s book of power. Said search led to the deaths of innocents and everyone knows Superman hates that.

Later on the Silver Banshee became a foe for Supergirl. When DC rebooted their universe with the New 52, Siobhan McDougal became Siobhan Smythe, a Irish girl on the run from father. In this continuity, Siobhan and Supergirl are friends, after the former saved the latter from the local authorities.

But based on the synopsis from “Supergirl,” it doesn”t look like Kara and Siobhan will be teaming up to fight off Silver Banshee”s father – the Black Banshee – anytime soon.

Italia Ricci is joining the cast of Supergirl as Siobhan Smythe, Cat Grant's latest hire who at first becomes a work nemesis for Kara. But she later proves a more deadly foe for Supergirl when she takes on the mantle of DC Comics villain, Silver Banshee.

With Ricci signed on as a “recurring character” there is potential here for a storyline to develop about friendship blossoming between the foes. Fingers crossed!

“Supergirl” airs Mondays at 8/7c on CBS.
