Surprise: Michael Bay’s ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ is getting a sequel

Cowabunga, dude: Raphael, Leonardo, Michaelangelo and Donatello are coming back for another round.

After scoring a surprisingly potent $65 million at the box office this weekend, Paramount has announced development on a sequel to Michael Bay's “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot, with a release date set for June 3, 2016. Along with Bay, who will reprise his role as producer, Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec are returning to write the script. It's not yet clear whether original director Jonathan Liebsman will return at the helm, however.

As noted by Deadline, the sequel's release date will (at this point, anyway) pit it against the Seth Rogen-Jonah Hill animated comedy “Sausage Party,” as well as the second weekends of both Disney's recently-announced “Alice in Wonderland” followup and Bryan Singer's “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

“Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before,” said Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman in a statement. “The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.”

With an estimated international gross of $28.7 million in 17 territories this weekend, the “TMNT” reboot now stands at nearly $100 million worldwide. Domestically the film managed to unseat last weekend's champ “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which brought in around $41 million in its second weekend.
