Brenton Thwaites, Odeya Rush on Brutal Scenes in ‘The Giver’

The black-and-white cinematography and sterilized-seeming sets of “The Giver,” based on Lois Lowry's Newbery-winning 1993 novel, give the movie a dystopian air unlike any other movie — let alone a YA-tinged movie — out this year. It's a moving film set in a creepy, brainwashed future, and when you watch young actors Brenton Thwaites (of “Maleficent”) and Odeya Rush (“The Odd Life of Timothy Green”) navigating the film, you have to wonder: Is this as unsettling on-set as it is as a viewing experience?

We interviewed Thwaites, who plays the film's young and defiant protagonist Jonas, and Rush, who plays the defiantly emotional Fiona, to discuss the most brutal and emotional moments of filming, the power of Meryl Streep's voice, and how much time they spent soaking wet. Answer: A lot.
