‘The Messengers’ won’t get a second season on The CW

There will be no Second Coming for The CW's “The Messengers.”

Due to low ratings, unimpressive reviews and an impossible Friday time period, it was already a foregone conclusion, but now it's also official: “The Messengers” won't be back for a second season.

Yes, it's a early for The CW to be prepared to go out on that limb, since only three episodes have aired.

And yes, I'm already prepared for several people to talk about networks no longer giving shows time and whatnot.

There are, however, realities that exist.

“The Messengers” actually premiered with a somewhat respectable 1.195 million viewers and a 0.3 rating among adults 18-49. The second week dropped to 771,000 viewers and a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49. Last week's new episode of “The Messengers” drew 651,000 viewers and did a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49. It did a coveted 0.0 rating and a 0 share among female viewers 12-17.

That, apparently, has been enough for The CW to make a decision.

It didn't help that fellow midseason drama “iZombie” has, with an obviously superior lead-in, been a reasonable success and earned far better ratings.

“iZombie” earned its second season pickup on Thursday and joined “The 100,” “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Jane the Virgin,” “Supernatural,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals,” “Reign” and “Beauty and the Beast” in The CW's drama renewal column for next year. The CW also picked up the “Flash”/”Arrow” spinoff “DC's Legends of Tomorrow,” plus hour-longs “Cordon” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” on Thursday.

That's just a lot of programming for a network that only has 10 hours per week.

Also getting the axe on Thursday was “Hart of Dixie,” which easily beat the numbers for “Messengers” in its nearly two seasons of Friday airings.

Created by Eoghan O'Donnell, “The Messengers” starred Diogo Morgado, Shantel VanSanten, J.D. Pardo, Joel Courtney, Jon Fletcher, Anna Diop, Sofia Black-D'Elia and Erin Calder.

For it first season, “The Messengers” remains on The CW's schedule on Fridays and there are no plans to pull it.

Are you heartbroken?
