Even before the much anticipated “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” opens this summer, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks are staking a claim to a release date for a third “Transformers epic,” tentatively titled “Transformers 3,” on July 1, 2011.

According to Variety, this is the first official confirmation of a third film for the franchise based on the popular Hasbro toy line.  However, neither studio was able to confirm whether director Michael Bay or stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox will return for the third chapter in the series.

The first “Transformers” opened on July 3, 2007 and grossed over $700 million worldwide.  “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” will hit a salivating fanbase on June 24, 2009.  As of this moment, “Transformers 3” has no competition on its  2011 release date.

In related news, Paramount has moved up the release of Marvel Studios’ “Thor” from June 16, 2011 to May 20, 2011.
