Fast National ratings for Tuesday, March 3, 2009.

Guess what? A two-hour “American Idol” was the most popular show on Tuesday night, allowing FOX to dominate the ratings in all key measures!

Shocking, we know.

Among adults 18-49, FOX averaged an 8.9 rating, more than the combined totals for NBC (3.2 rating), CBS (2.5 rating), ABC (2.3 rating) and The CW (0.7 rating) in the key demographic.

Overall, FOX averaged an estimated 24.2 million viewers to go with a 13.8 rating/21 share. CBS was a distant second with a 7.9/12, followed by the 5.3/8 for NBC and ABC’s 4.5/7. The CW trailed with a 1.2/2.

At 8 p.m. “American Idol” gave FOX a 12.9/20, beating the 8.7/13 for an “NCIS” repeat on CBS. NBC’s “Biggest Loser: Couples” beat the 3.9/6 for “Homeland Security” on ABC. The second season premiere of “Reaper” had a 1.5/2, which isn’t great, but it isn’t so horrible going against the “American Idol” onslaught.

FOX stayed on top at 9 p.m. with “American Idol” improving to a 14.7/22. CBS’ “The Mentalist” repeat was second with an 8.2/12. NBC’s “Biggest Loser: Couples” improved to a 6.0/9, beating ABC’s double-dose of “Scrubs” repeats, plus a “90210” repeat on The CW.

ABC moved into first at 10 p.m. with “The Bachelor – After the Final Rose,” which had a 7.4/12, to beat the 6.9/11 for a “Without a Trace” repeat on CBS. NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” repeat was third.
