Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009.

Although they dropped in Week Two, ABC’s “Modern Family” and “Cougar Town” held onto much of their audience, combining with two new comedies for a strong Wednesday night block, though “Eastwick” took a drop in its second week.

All of that didn’t keep CBS from controlling the night on the strength of procedurals “Criminal Minds” and “CSI: NY.”

Among adults 18-49, FOX and CBS tied for first with a 3.0 rating. ABC’s 2.8 rating was close behind. NBC was fourth in the key demographic with a 2.1 rating, still far ahead of the 1.0 rating for The CW.

Overall, CBS was in control, averaging an estimated 11.2 million viewers to go with a 7.2 rating/12 share. ABC was well back in second with a 5.2/9. NBC’s 4.7/8 and the 4.2/7 for FOX followed. The CW’s 1.5/2 was fifth.

ABC started the night in first with the premieres of “Hank” and “The Middle,” which both averaged a 5.4/9, to go with a 2.3 demo rating. While lower than last week’s ABC comedy premieres, the numbers are still far better than anything ABC was getting from a comedy block last season.

NBC’s “Mercy” was second in the 8 p.m. hour with a 4.8/8, topping CBS’ “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and “Gary Unmarried” in third. FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance” was fourth with a 4.0/7, but won the hour in the 18-49 demo with a 2.7 rating. The CW’s “America’s Next Top Model” hit a season high with a 2.3/4.

CBS moved into first at 9 p.m. with an 8.6/14 for “Criminal Mind.” ABC’s “Modern Family (6.0/10) and “Cougar Town” (5.7/9) were second overall and won the demo with a 3.7 rating. NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” had a 5.3/8 for third. FOX was fourth with a 4.4/7 for “Glee,” which also had a 3.2 rating in the demo. The CW’s “Melrose Place” encore was fifth.

At 10 p.m. CBS got an 8.4/15 from “CSI: NY.” ABC’s “Eastwick” was down to a 4.4/8 in its second week, still edging out NBC’s “The Jay Leno Show.”
