Fast National ratings for Sunday, April 19, 2009.

Although “Desperate Housewives” and “Brothers & Sisters” were both down in their Sunday returns, they still helped ABC win the night in young viewers. If they hadn’t been down, maybe ABC could have beaten CBS in total viewers as well.

Among adults 18-49, ABC averaged a 3.1 rating, beating FOX’s 2.5 rating in the key demographic. NBC was third with a 2.3 rating, followed by CBS’ 2.0 rating. The CW’s 0.3 rating trailed.

Overall, though, CBS averaged an estimated 10.48 million viewers to go with a 6.6 rating/11 share. ABC’s 6.0/10 was a close second, followed by the 4.2/7 for NBC. FOX’s 3.0/5 was fourth, well ahead of the 0.6/1 for The CW.

CBS began the night in first with a 7.7/14 for “60 Minutes.” ABC’s “America’s Funniest Home Videos” was second with a 4.4/8. NBC’s “Miss USA Pageant” was third with a 2.6/5, beating a pair of animated repeats on FOX, plus the 0.4/1 for a “Jericho” repeat on The CW.

At 8 p.m. CBS stayed in front with a 6.2/10 for “The Amazing Race.” ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” was second. NBC’s pageant telecast improved to a 3.8/6, beating the 3.8/6 for a new episode of “The Simpsons” and a lackluster 2.9/5 for the premiere of the animated comedy “Sit Down, Shut Up.” Note that “The Simpsons” won its half-hour in the 18-49 demo, but “Sit Down, Shut Off” fell to third. The CW did its part for TV Turnoff Week, airing “Cuthroat Island.”

ABC moved into first place at 9 p.m. with an 8.5/13 for “Desperate Housewives.” The CBS telefilm “The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler” was a soft second with a 6.3/10. The first hour of NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice” was third, topping the 3.8/6 for new episodes of “Family Guy” and “American Dad” on FOX. The CW’s movie had a 0.8/1 in its second hour.

“Brothers & Sisters” was first in the 10 p.m. hour, nipping the second hour of CBS’ telefilm, which dipped slightly. NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice” was up to a 5.5/9 and tied with the ABC drama for the hour win in the 18-49 demo.
