TV Ratings: FOX’s ‘Idol’ eliminates Wednesday competition

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, March 11, 2009.

FOX’s “Lie to Me” actually held its own in its 8 p.m. hour debut and combined with a little show called “American Idol” to give the network a comfortable Wednesday win.

Among adults 18-49, FOX averaged a 6.1 rating, beating the 3.1 rating for CBS. NBC was third in the key demographic with a 1.8 rating, followed by ABC’s 1.4 rating and the 1.2 rating for The CW.

Overall, FOX averaged an estimated 18.01 million viewers and a 10.5 rating/17 share. CBS was second with a 7.4/12. NBC finished a distant third with a 3.8/6, with ABC’s 2.7/4 and the 1.9/3 for The CW trailing. 

“Lie to Me” started the night off strong for FOX, winning the 8 p.m. hour with a 6.7/11, also taking the 18-49 demo. CBS’ “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and “Gary Unmarried” averaged a 4.9/8 for second. The CW — Yes, The CW! — grabbed third with a 3.0/5 for “America’s Next Top Model.” The premiere of “The Chopping Block” on NBC managed only a 2.9/5 for fourth, at least beating ABC’s repeats of “Scrubs.”

At 9 p.m. the season’s first “American Idol” elimination episode did a 14.4/22 for FOX. CBS’ “Criminal Minds” was second with an 8.8/14. “Life” was third on NBC with a 3.4/5, beating ABC’s “Lost” repeat and an old “90210” on The CW.

CBS moved into first at 10 p.m. with an 8.6/14 for “CSI: NY.” NBC’s “Law & Order” was second with a 5.1/8, while “Life on Mars” slumped to a 3.0/5 on ABC.
