Fast National ratings for Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009.

The premieres of “NCIS” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” delivered huge numbers for CBS, while “The Good Wife” also had a strong opening.

Also, ABC had a so-so premiere for “The Forgotten” and The CW’s “Melrose Place” reboot continues to slide.

Among adults 18-49, CBS averaged a 4.0 rating for the night, beating FOX’s 3.3 rating and the 3.2 rating for ABC. NBC was a sold fourth with a 2.9 rating, leaving The CW in last with a 0.9 rating in the coveted demographic.

Overall, CBS averaged an estimated 17.35 million viewers to go with a 10.8 rating/17 share. ABC was second with an 8.8/14 and 13.3 million viewers. NBC was a distant third with a 4.6/7, followed by FOX’s 4.0/6. The CW trailed with a 1.3/2.

CBS swept the primetime hours starting at 8 p.m. with a 12.0/19 for “NCIS,” which averaged nearly 20 million viewers and also led the hour in the key demo with a 4.6 rating. ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” was second with a 9.4/15. The first hour of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” was third, beating the 3.9/6 for FOX’s “Hell’s Kitchen.” The CW’s “90210” had a 1.5/2 for fifth.

The “NCIS” spinoff “NCIS: Los Angeles” held up well in the 9 p.m. hour with an 11.1/17 for CBS, averaging more than 18.3 million viewers and holding onto most of its demo lead-in. ABC’s “Dancing” improved to a 10.7/16 in its second hour. NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” was also up, doing a 5.0/8, still ahead of FOX’s “Hell’s Kitchen.” The CW’s “Melrose Place” was down to a 1.0/2 and 1.45 million viewers in its third airing.

The premiere of “The Good Wife” had a 9.2/16 for CBS in the 10 p.m. hour, averaging 13.72 million viewers and a 3.1 rating in the key demographic, a very good (but maybe not great) start. ABC’s premiere of “The Forgotten” had a 6.3/11, showing comparable “Dancing” retention to “Castle.” NBC’s “The Jay Leno Show” had a bit of a bounce-back after Monday’s series lows.
