TV Ratings: ‘Ugly Betty’ premiere soft on Friday

ABC’s “Ugly Betty” had its two-hour premiere on Friday night and, to nobody’s surprise, numbers for the Emmy-winning series were soft in the tough time slot. 
Instead of “Ugly Betty” shaking things up, the night went to CBS’ reliable procedurals and FOX’s coverage of the baseball playoff game between the Yankees and the Angels.
Among adults 18-49, FOX averaged a 2.3 rating, beating CBS’ 1.9 rating in the key demographic. ABC’s 1.6 rating and the 1.4 rating for NBC followed. The CW was fifth with a 0.8 rating.
Overall, though, CBS averaged an estimated 8 million viewers to go with a 5.1 rating/9 share. FOX’s 4.6/8 was good for second, with NBC in third with a 4.1/7. ABC’s 3.9/7 was fourth, leaving The CW in fifth with a 1.3/2.
CBS won the 8 p.m. hour with a 5.1/9 for “Ghost Whisperer.” NBC’s “Jon & Kate Plus 8”-inspired “Law & Order” was a close second with a 4.9/9. FOX finished third with the baseball game, but won the hour with a 2.2 demo rating. ABC’s “Ugly Betty” had a 3.4/6 in its first hour, only managing a 1.3 demo rating and just over 5.01 million viewers. Those “Ugly Betty” numbers don’t look good, but ABC emphasizes that they’re up from the October 2008 averages for the time period. The CW’s “Smallville” was fifth with a 1.7/3. With 2.62 million viewers, it was the largest “Smallville” audience of the season and the largest audience in the time period since The CW said good-bye to “Smackdown.”
“Medium” kept CBS in first at 9 p.m. with a 5.2/9. FOX’s baseball was second with a 4.7/8, but won the hour with a 2.4 demo rating. NBC’s news special was third. ABC’s “Ugly Betty” improved slightly to a 3.5/6 in its second hour. The CW trailed with an encore of “America’s Next Top Model.”
At 10 p.m. “Numb3rs” had a 5.0/9 for CBS, nipping the 4.7/9 for ABC’s “20/20,” but the ABC offering actually won the hour in the key demo. NBC’s “The Jay Leno Show” was third.
