“You”re in rock and roll heaven, man.” That”s how The Rolling Stones” Keith Richards describes recording at Alabama”s legendary FAME Studios.

A beehive of recording activity in the ’60s and ’70s, FAME was the site of some of the biggest hits ever recorded, including Percy Sledge”s “When A Man Loves A Woman”; Aretha Franklin”s “Chain of Fools,” the Stones” “Wild Horses” and Paul Simon”s “Loves Me Like a Rock.”
“Muscle Shoals,” a documentary premiering at Sundance Film Festival this year, chronicles the story of Rick Hall”s FAME Studio and its rival, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, which was started by FAME”s rhythm section, the Swampers. As Lynyrd Skynrd fans know, the Swampers were immortalized in the lyrics of “Sweet Home Alabama.”

By the way, legendary recording studios will definitely get their due at Sundance this year. Also on the docket is Dave Grohl’s documentary on Van Nuys, Calif.’s Sound City studio, where Nirvana recorded “Nevermind.”
