Watch: New ‘Thor’ trailer shows the dangers of an epic Asgard on Earth

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios debuted a brand new trailer for “Thor” today which features star Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings, Anthony Hopkins and some big monsters from the Ice Giant’s planet.

The first part of Marvel’s “Avengers” prequel summer, “Thor” spins the origin of the Marvel Comics superhero by turning his home world of Asgard from a mythical dimension into a distant planet.  Cast out by his father and ruler of Asgard Odin (Hopkins), the God of Thunder (Hemsworth) finds himself on Earth only to be discovered by New Mexico scientists (no doubt there for the tax incentives) Jane Foster (Portman), Professor Andrews (Stellan Skarsgard) and Darcy (Dennings) (cue the fish out of water jokes).  Unlike the first preview, however, which focused on SHIELD’s interrogation of the captured Thor, this trailer sets up an epic battle between Odin’s evil stepson Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Thor, who will no doubt return to his homeworld (humbled of course) to save the day.

What do you think of the new trailer?  Does Paramount and Marvel have a hit on their hands?

“Thor” opens nationwide in IMAX and 3D on Friday, May 6.
