Sylvester Stallone has run a number of missions on film in his storied action movie career, but his struggle in “The Expendables” progresses outside of the actual production.

In an interview with HitFix at the San Diego Comic-Con this year, the 64-year-old actor explained his role as an elder statesmen in the genre: “Usually at my age, you”re out there flyfishing somewhere in Ireland. For me to keep on doing this and prove it can be done,” is encouragement for a younger generation to tackle big-budget blow-’em-up flicks. “I”m trying to get the younger guys to step up and try and get these kind of films made, ‘cuz I know they watch them.”

Sly also delved into the driving force behind the killer characters in “Expendables” — actors like Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture (also in the video) and Steve Austin — within a framework of “Christological taxonomy [sic].”

“Mercenaries by and large are cold blooded killers for money… so these guys go back to save this person… to save themselves,” he explains.

Just how they wage their battles is done through five different fighting styles, one of which Mr. Rocky Balboa may have a leg (or fist) up on his enemies.

“Me?” he said. “I box a little.”

“The Expendables” opens nationwide on Aug. 13.
