The New Vikings Stadium Looks Like The Sandcrawler In Star Wars

By 05.14.13

Sorry, but I’m not sorry. This was all I could think of when I flipped through the proposed design images of the new Vikings stadium unveiled last night at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. From the side, the stadium has the exact shape as the Sandcrawler in Star Wars.

The Vikings and architectural firm HKS Sports and Entertainment group presented their 65,000-seat (expandable to 73,000 for a Super Bowl) stadium design to the public for approval hoping for a warm reception and quick approval from city so they can break ground on the new facility in the fall. There’s still the pesky problem with how to pay for a new stadium, what with imagined public funds generated from gambling initiatives not coming close to hitting projected revenue targets, and the presentation acknowledged dream items like a retractable roof were not feasible due to budgetary concerns, leading to the design’s inclusion of the what would be the world’s largest clear ethylene tetrafluoroethylene roof over half of the stadium to allow in outdoor light and large opening plaza doors to give the venue outdoor feel.

In addition to sloped roof for easier snow removal, the new Vikings stadium has more restrooms than any other stadium in the league and could easily transition into a venue for NCAA tournaments, baseball, hockey and soccer games.

No word if the Vikings plan on giving fans the option of putting “Utini!” on team jerseys at this time.
