There are certainly questions about some of Rex Ryan’s abilities as a head coach, but there’s no doubt either KSK Rex or IRL Rex knows how to fire guys up. Case in point: he once told the Jets before a game against the Patriots, according to LaDainian Tomlinson:
“We were playing the Patriots one time, and as I mentioned, Rex is a master motivator,” said Tomlinson, who played under Ryan in 2010 and 2011. “It was going to be a big game, a heated rivalry game, and Rex got in front of us, he said, ‘I’m going to set the tempo today, guys,’ he said, ‘I’m going to set the tempo when I meet Bill Belichick in the center of the field, I’m gonna start it off and punch him in the face. I loved it.”
Not sure whether I’m more amused that Rex said it or disappointed that he didn’t follow through. There’s always Thursday night. Too bad the Jets won their opener. If there weren’t still a shred of hope that Rex could save his job, this would be the best way to get fired.
