It didn’t look good when Vince Wilfork went down on the opening drive of the Patriots’ Sunday night win in Atlanta and was carted off the field shortly thereafter. Already, the worst suspicions are confirmed: Wilfork is almost certainly done for the season with a torn Achilles.
As New England’s best defender, Wilfork’s loss should cost the team dearly, even if the Patriots didn’t suffer overmuch without him against the Falcons. Given time to scheme ways to exploit his absence and teams not missing their starting running back, opponents should find it easier to put up points against the Pats. Good luck beating the Broncos without creating the kind of pressure Wilfork can.
As for the rest of us, no Wilfork reduces the possibility of more Fat Guy Touchdowns.
