KSK World Cup Open Thread: Argentina-Netherlands

While it was easy to get a read on yesterday’s seemingly preordained game, today feels a little bit different. Yes, another team could be without its captain, Netherlands’ Robin van Persie, but it seems doubtful that an intestinal illness will stop him from playing. Both teams are going in confident, both teams feel like they can win. This is an unpredictable, even match and should be one of the best of the tourney.

Been calling this the Oranje Revenge Tour for 2010 since before the World Cup began and my gut has been going with the Netherlands (mostly because it associates the Dutch with cheese) this entire ride, but Argentina, for lack of a better word, always seems to have magic on its side. Not just because of players like Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero (yes, another one of my City loves), but because they are so open on the field, so free compared to the organized pressure of the big three out of Holland, van Persie, Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben. Argentina is also the last hope for new against old, CONMEBOL versus UEFA, giving them a tinge of underdog to their quest even if they have just as much right to be in the final four as any team.

Worst part of today’s game? Loser of this has to play Brazil on Saturday for the third place title. Imagine how depressing that would feel. Other worst part? Winner has to face a terrifyingly scary German team on Sunday.
