In two weeks, the 49ers have gone from presumptive Super Bowl contender to being on the verge of having their season wrecked. And this week they find themselves traveling to face a division rival that, while less talented, the Niners couldn’t find a way to defeat in 2012.
There are areas of concern on both sides of the ball with San Francisco but things are looking even more dire with the once-feared defense, especially now that they begin life without Aldon Smith for the foreseeable future while he figures out how to stop being Football Amanda Bynes. Patrick Willis is inactive tonight as well. The 49ers have surrendered 56 points the last two weeks and even if that it’s an ungodly amount, it’s a problem when their offense has been having issues as well. Then again, St. Louis’ attack is certainly one an opponent can get back on track against.
And for what it’s worth, doubtful that the 49ers will have issues with crowd noise in St. Louis like they had in Seattle.
St. Louis got embarrassed last week in Dallas. To a degree, their offensive woes are to be expected. The defense, less so. The Rams came into that game with the sixth ranked run defense and gave up 175 yards to DeMarco Murray. Frank Gore has only had 20 carries the last two weeks with knee issues cropping up this past week. His limited productivity has only exacerbated the other problems that plague Kaep and company.
