When people are making fun of an Al Michaels verbal tic, it’s typically his frustrating inability to pronounce “New Orleans” (NEW ORLEEEEEEEEEEEINS), which makes sense, because it’s pretty goddamn annoying. One trademark Michaelsism that I don’t think gets enough credit (read: ridicule) is his habit of describing anything of significance with a drawn-out YYUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGEEEEEE. Here are the examples just from his calling of the Super Bowl. Probably would have been better if I had this idea earlier and pulled an entire season’s worth of examples into a clip, but then it would be about 20 minutes long. And nobody wants that.
Oh, it just so happens that today is the anniversary of the Miracle on Ice, (YAY! RANDOM POST BECOMES MAGICALLY TOPICAL!) so be sure to recall a time when Michaels didn’t get on your nerves.
