I truly came away thinking that was the most that this deeply flawed Jets team could offer. Sadly, it was close but just not quite enough to come away with the upset. Perhaps settling for four field goals in the first half is a fixable problem, but I don’t know if you’re gonna see the strong overall performance again this season from the Jets that you saw this evening.
Nick Folk has a chance to win with a 58-yard field goal, having not missed in four attempts earlier in the game. It was Chris Jones, the player involved in the kicking penalty last year that cost the Patriots a game against the Jets, with the block to seal the victory.
New England definitely looked vulnerable against the run with Jerod Mayo gone. Even coming away with a victory, that has to be a concern. As for the Jets, improving to 2-5 probably wouldn’t have saved the season but everyone involved certainly would have felt better with a win over the Patriots. I wouldn’t go as far to say that Geno Smith played great, but he played well enough to win and limited mistakes. Also worth noting that he only missed one play after taking a pretty nasty looking shot to the knee by Jones near his own end zone.
On the bright side: hey, two weeks in a row with watchable Thursday night games. This one was actually good from start to finish. Thursday night is the bestest now! Of course I say that and Chargers-Broncos next Thursday, which looks like it should be a good game, will suck.
