Doesn’t matter if you agree or disagree with Bob Costas comments on gun culture during his weekly Sunday Night Football fireside chat, we can all come together and have a nice chuckle over Jason Whitlock depicted as typing his column with his butt while sleeping on the couch NMA TV’s coverage of the controversy. NMA also wisely points out that politics and sports have a long history together and in ten seconds does a better job explaining the Miracle on Ice than the entire two-plus hours of Disney’s MIRACLE.
Continuing with Costas coverage, Robert Lipsyte wrote a defense of the gun editorial on Deadspin this morning.
In an email, Whitlock told me, “My column was primarily about my feeling the Chiefs shouldn’t have played on Sunday and the fact they did is an indication that football’s importance in American society is exaggerated to an unhealthy level. A secondary point in my column was that American gun culture is out of control. I don’t have a problem with Bob choosing to focus on my secondary point. He paraphrased and quoted my sentiments accurately. He only had 90 seconds to make a point.”
90 seconds. For the few days these 90 seconds have dominated the sports news cycle. Good thing it wasn’t any shorter, or we’d never hear the end of it.
