You Can’t Challenge Possession On A Batted Ball Penalty Because NFL Replay Rules Are Stupid

After a Le’Veon Bell fumble deep in Steelers territory in the third quarter, the Packers took over with a first and goal but were held out of the end zone on three plays and forced to attempt a game-tying field goal. That was blocked. Ryan Clark recovered but attempted to pitch it back to William Gay, who dropped it. Another Steelers player batted the ball oput of bounds and was flagged. The refs then awarded possession and a first down to Green Bay, not acknowledging that the Steelers ever gained possession.

When Mike Tomlin attempted to challenge the call, lead referee Carl Cheffers told the crowd, “Possession in the field of play is not a challengeable aspect of a replay.” And so there’s your latest memorable muddled form of explanation for convoluted NFL challenge rules.
