36 year old Jennifer Welter is 5’2″, 130 lbs, and she just became the first female to ever play a non-kicking position in the history of professional football.
Welter has been playing Women’s Football Alliance for the past 10 years as a linebacker, but the Indoor Football League’s Texas Revolution signed her up and moved her to running back where she ran for -2 yards on three carries in Saturday’s exhibition game against the North Texas Crunch. Here’s all three of them:
She got lit up for sure, but let’s give her credit for bouncing right back up. Jennifer even got a little trash-talk in after her first hit she took from the Crunch’s 245 lb Cedric Hearvey:
“I said, ‘Is that all you got?’ ” Welter said she told Hearvey after the first of her three carries for the Texas Revolution. “They (Crunch players) were getting all alive, and I had to say something. I didn’t want them to think I was intimidated.”
This is an historic occasion that is sure to open many eyes because not only did she break the gender barrier, but more importantly she has better ball security than Stevan Ridley.
