Today starts off with a bang as the dominate Netherlands team , fresh off their 5-1 drumming of Spain, face the Socceroos from the land down under. Australia had some fight in their 3-1 loss to Chile, but head into today’s matchup already down a starter to injury as Ivan Franjic sits this one out with a hamstring tear.
Midday pits a humiliated Spain struggling for survival against Chile, suddenly a favorite to be one of the two to come out of Group B. Chile faced only a small challenge in Australia — the lowest ranked team in the tourney — last week and should be ready smack Spain while they’re down. Would be quite upset to see 2010 World Cup and 2012 Euro champions Spain to down and out so soon.
And finally, we end the day on Cameroon-Croatia. Croatia should feel pretty good about heading into the match with a solid showing against Brazil in the opener, hobbled more by bad officiating than bad play, although off-field distractions could be muddling their game planning a bit. Cameroon didn’t get a shot on goal during their match against Mexico, a team that was far more tilted in their opponents favor than the 0-1 final score reflects.
