When Michael Vick signed with the Jets, unless he planned to take the jersey number from the quarterback he’d be backing up, Vick would have to wear a number other than 7 for the first time in his NFL career, which matters because… just kidding, it doesn’t.
On Sunday night, Vick finally unveiled his new jersey number: 8. That’s a quality number – even, non-prime, turns into an infinity sign so easily. According to TMZ, the choice is a tribute to Steve Young, a fellow left-handed quarterback who scrambled sometimes.
That’s all well and good. What matters to me, however, is that Vick is intent on using V8 to brand himself with the new number.
It could be – and probably is – a reference to an engine, but I prefer to think of it as the popular brand of veggie drink.
That means the dream of a Michael Vick V8 endorsement is alive and well. Sure, Vick doesn’t strike me as a V8 drinker and V8 seems like too conservative of a company to align itself with someone as controversial as Vick, but dare to dream, people.
Dare to dream.
