These days, when you hear an old football analyst complain about ballcaps being worn backward, it’s usually an old white guy trying to use racial coding to bash a black quarterback for being a thuggy thug glory boy who doesn’t know proper hat etiquette and will probably kidnap your virgin daughter. So, in a way, it’s actually kind of refreshing that old man Mike Ditka is pulling out that criticism for Matt Stafford, who is clearly being held back not by the fact that he fumbles one snap per game but the fact that, like pretty much every quarterback in the NFL, he wears his hat backward from time to time.
“I think when you look at him you see all the touches of greatness, in my opinion,” Ditka said. “Then you see some plays and go, ‘Wow! Why’d he do that?’
“I think he can make all the throws. He’s a smart kid. I wish he’d put the baseball cap on frontwards instead of backwards all the time.”
“If you’re the leader of the football team, I think you’ve got to stand up and be that leader, assume that role,” Ditka said. “A lot of it is what you do on the field, certainly. But I think a little of it has to do with appearance, too. You know, respect the game, respect your team. That’s all.
That’s right! If you don’t wear your hat the proper way, you’ll never be regarded as a true leader.
Just look at that majestic C’MON MAN hat. It makes me want to follow Ditka into battle, where we will wage war on the enemy using day-old football highlights.
