Another week, another debate about the inherent rightness of a team running up the score on an opponent. It’s a tedious argument that will never go away because the two common reactions to the idea of running up the score are “THAT’S DISRESPECT!” and “WELL, IF YOU DON’T WANT ‘EM TO RUN UP THE SCORE, YOU GOTTA STOP ‘EM!” Both of which are right and both of which are opinions that aren’t fluid, so it’s possible to bring up the subject time and again, only to get the same reaction. Which is perfect fodder for sports media always looking to start new pointless fights.
Anyway, the coach getting flack for running up the score this week is Pete Carroll, who not only kept piling on the points on the Bills on Sunday, but did so using tactics like fake punts, even though his team was up by 30 points in the 4th quarter. When asked about the fake punt after the game, Carroll expressed some regret, but only that his hand was forced by the idiocy of the Bills.
“I feel bad about this,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said afterward, according to Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times. “It was an automatic for us.”
An automatic means the Seahawks prepared the fake for a specific look from the Bills. When they got that look, the play was on. Carroll never thought to call it off with a 30-point lead in the fourth quarter and blame should go to the players here too who should have the sense to make an inquiry with the coaching staff instead of running a fake at an inappropriate time.
“We looked for it every time we were going to punt, and it was just there,” Carroll said. “I should have stopped it in the sense that it looked bad.”
Bills coach Chan Gailey declined comment. The bet here is if Gailey ever has chance to seek payback, he will.
Obviously, Carroll is full of sh*t. If he truly didn’t want to execute the fake, he wouldn’t have. He’s just trying to cover up dickishness with civility. Still, that’s nowhere near as funny as the idea of Chan Gailey getting payback on someone. If we’re talking KSKharacter Chan Gailey, that might mean kiddie porn placed on your hacked hard drive. IRL Chan Gailey, however, can only start running out the clock in the first half so you can’t hang another 40+ on his team.
