We were really looking forward to having Gronk back this Sunday. He’s a great counterbalance to the numb dickishness of Tom Brady, and makes the normally machine-like Patriots somewhat spontaneous and exciting.
Alas, we’ll have to wait at least another week to see Rob back out there doing Gronk spikes and just being a huge oaf in general. Ian Rappoport of NFL.com reports that Poppa Gronkowski has been pushing for Rob to wait until as late as week 6 before he makes his return. Apparently the patriarch of the NFL equivilant of the O’Doyle family wasn’t happy with the way the Patriots handled Rob’s forearm injury last season, and wants his son to wait until he’s completely healthy before returning from his offseason surgeries.
Gronk’s never struck me as the type of person to listen to what his father or anyone else who’s not a phone sex operator has to say, so I’m assuming that he’s feeling some lingering discomfort from the surgery and wants to be fully healthy before he returns. But the Patriots are going to be at a major disadvantage without him going up against the Falcons tonight on Sunday Night Football.
