There aren’t many linebackers with more natural talent than Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain. When he’s been able to get on the field, he’s the kind of guy who makes plays and causes headaches for opposing offenses.
But McClain has run into a number of off the field issues. Earlier this year, McClain was suspended 10 games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. The year before that, he was suspended four games for a similar violation. For how much fun it is watching McClain play, it’s equally maddening to watch him get in trouble for off the field stuff which impacts his ability to play.
Also impacting McClain’s ability to play is the fact that he has reportedly put on a ton of weight this offseason due to purple drank, which for the unaware is a mixture of Sprite and codeine. According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, McClain has consumed so much of the stuff that he’s packed on approximately 40 pounds this offseason.
This, unsurprisingly, has left McClain “incredibly out of shape,” according to Cole. Additionally, Cole said that McClain’s off the field issues stemming from consuming purple drank are likely to lead to a split between him and the Cowboys, saying that a source told him it’s “almost impossible” to ever see the talented but troubled linebacker in Dallas again.
Hopefully McClain is able to kick this habit and drop this excess weight. If that leads to him playing football again, that’s cool, but above everything else, it’s sad to see something like this happen to anyone.
