Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz got the axe this morning despite having one good season in his five years with the team. I had forgotten how bad the Lions were before he took over for Rod Marinelli. Schwartz only won eight games in his first two years in Detroit and even that was viewed as an accomplishment. Granted, following Matt Millen is like getting Brett Favre’s sloppy seconds so you’re naturally going to get the benefit of the doubt for a while, but Schwartz couldn’t escape the black hole that is the Lions for long.
The wheels came off when: Cameras caught him yelling “what the fuck are you booing at?” at the home fans.
His record: .363 (29-51)
Why you shouldn’t feel bad for him: Still has two years and $12 million left on his contract.
What he had to do to save his job: Finish .500. That’s it. You’re a goddamned mayor-for-life in Detroit if you can get the Lions to win 8 games.

Who fired him?
Note on #Lions: The word is Bill Ford Jr. is making the call on coaches & front office, not his dad William Clay Ford (the patient one).

SI’s Chris Burke points out that “William Clay Ford was the one behind decisions to stick with hires like Matt Millen and Rod Marinelli,” So yeah, I guess “patient” would be one word to use there, but I would go with “woefully incompetent to the highest possible degree.”
Where is he going? Schwartz was a beast of a defensive coordinator for the Titans and would probably have his pick of several openings, depending on who’s going to be running a 4-3.
