BERMAN ALERT! BERMAN ALERT! BERMAN ALERT! BERMAN ALERT! BERMAN ALERT! YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!
The Chargers are sporting all white tonight for their season opener, which is always an imposing look. Still, they’re a team no longer run by Norv Turner so at least some measure of respect is due. Safe to say, however, that Mike McCoy’s debut won’t be as dynamic as Chip Kelly’s. Just the airtime of Philip Rivers’ reduces the amount of plays they can run by a third.
Manti Te’o is out and a lot of obvious non-Rivers jokes go with him. Luckily there’s Ryan Mathews to add to the weekend’s vast array of running back fumbles, which will serve to depress those who had to begrudgingly take him in the middle rounds of fantasy. I’m guilty of that on one of my teams.
If this follows recent Texans history, this will begin a stretch of early season dominance that has Houston looking like formidable Super Bowl contender until about Week 10 when the decline begins, culminating in a second-round playoff loss. Arian Foster calls it the will of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
