Tony “Focus on the Family” Dungy couldn’t help but say something stupid yet again, this time in an interview with the Tampa Tribune in an article titled, Holding Players to a Higher Standard. What did Dungy bring up this week? Why of course he wouldn’t have drafted Michael Sam, because he would have been a distraction to the team.
“I wouldn’t have taken him,’’ said former Bucs and Colts coach Tony Dungy, now an analyst for NBC. “Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it.
“It’s not going to be totally smooth … things will happen.’’
Paint it however you want to paint it; Dungy as the wise old sage, Dungy the broadcaster offering his opinion on football truths, Dungy as a private citizen exercising his freedom of expression and religion in a public space. All of those are true. But maybe Dungy, who has campaigned against gay marriage and who is an active member in an organization that singles out and targets LBGTQ students (in their world, gay teens shouldn’t even be allowed to go to prom and “pray the gay away” is the path to recovery) is just a straight up bigot.
Just days after Vikings coach Mike Priefer was suspended for three games for saying all the gays should be put on an island and nuked, Dungy has the gall to use coded language to say the exact same thing, “Gays, you’re not welcome in our league.” Too bad we’re not going to see NBC suspend him for three games for his remarks.
