The Teal Pumpkins You’re Seeing Are Trying To Make Halloween Safer

Halloween is the spookiest night of the year. Black cats roam the neighborhoods freely, the dead rise from their graves, witches run amok held aloft by their centuries-old broomsticks — and that’s just the tame Halloween classic Hocus Pocus.

Jokes aside, for some kids and their parents, Halloween can be extra terrifying, thanks to food allergies. A lot of fun-sized candy bars don’t have ingredients listed on their labels. And how much of a Halloween buzzkill is it to be that kid who gets all his candy taken away by your parents at the end of the night?

Enter the Teal Pumpkin Project — sponsored by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE). Launched last year, its aim is to help those trick-or-treaters with allergies have as much fun as their non-allergic pals by pointing out houses providing non-food treats. With, yes, teal pumpkins. Last year, houses from all 50 states, as well as seven different countries, participated in the project. This year, the aim is to get 100,000 households on board.

Getting involved with the Teal Pumpkin Project is easy: All you have to do is visit their website, take the pledge, stick a teal pumpkin outside your house, and make sure you’ve got a basket of fun non-edibles (glow sticks, stickers, temporary tattoos, toothbrushes, live cobras… hey, feel free to get creative here) ready for the kids who need ‘em. It’s an easy way to provide spooky seasonal cheer to everyone who comes a-knocking.
