Meet Guirec Soudee, a real-life “Gonzo” who has spent the past two years traveling the world with his beloved companion, a two-year-old chicken named “Monique.” The 24-year-old who is originally from Brittany, France, began his journey in the Canary Islands in May 2014, which is where he picked up his plucky traveler. From there, the pair traveled to St. Bart’s in the Caribbean, and eventually made their way to arctic waters in August, 2015.
Soudee is aware that his and Monique’s companionship is unusual, but for what it’s worth he seems to have a good sense of humor about it.
“I knew she was the one straight away,” Guirec tells the BBC from western Greenland, where he is now moored.
“She was only about four or five months old then, and had never left the Canary Islands. I didn’t speak any Spanish and she didn’t speak any French, but we got along.”
Guirec had originally considered bringing a cat along on his travels, but ultimately figured it would be too much work. Plus, Guirec learned that there are added benefits to having a chicken along with you as you travel.
“The hen was an ideal choice. It doesn’t need that much looking after and I’m able to get eggs at sea. People told me it wouldn’t work, that the hen would be too stressed and wouldn’t lay eggs.
“But there was no problem, she laid eggs straight away. She adapted to it perfectly – she was very comfortable very quickly.”
Fresh out of her body and onto his plate! Monique lays up to six eggs per week, even in colder climates. Guirec has been documenting his travels with Monique on Facebook and Instagram, and here are some photos of their adorable adventures:
