For years, the whispers surrounding the 24-hour drive through lanes of your local McDonald’s held questions about the supposed “secret menu.” What is it? Does it exist? What are the mysterious items lurking in the bowels of the fast food restaurant chain’s dungeon of delicacies? Well, the truth may finally have been exposed.

In a recent Reddit AMA, a McDonald’s shift manager from Glasgow, Scotland, revealed that a “secret menu” does indeed exist, but it’s not as simple as just ordering the menu item by name. The truth is that every golden arch might not know what a “land, sea, and air” burger is, but if you ask for a sandwich made of a chicken patty, filet o’ fish, and hamburger, well, then you have said secret sandwich. The trick is knowing the ingredients of the secret item.

“Order one and the workers might not know it by name … but if you explain what it is, and are willing to pay for all the ingredients, it’s just another ‘grill order’ that we can make up,” said the shift manager.

The customized items are known to employees as “grill orders,” and any changes you make to existing items will result in extra charges. So, if you don’t mind paying extra for a “monster mac” — an eight-patty Big Mac — then go ahead and ask for eight beef patties in your burger! It’s you prerogative.
