Allow The Lonely Island To Explain The Importance Of Turtle Sex (Beyond Just Comedic Value)

Turtle sex. It’s been a staple of internet comedy since, well, the internet was invented, practically. But as The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone), the stars of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, explain in this video for the Turtle Conservancy, turtles are important even beyond the hilarious noises they make when having sex.

“You may not realize this,” Samberg explains, “But turtles help shape our world. Sea turtles help maintain healthy oceans and beaches. Tortoise tunnels provide shelter for thousands of animals, and other turtles alert us to water pollution and climate change.” To prevent our half-shelled friends from disappearing, the Turtle Conservancy is purchasing and protecting land, which will ultimately help all kinds of animals in addition to turtles and tortoises.

But this cause is near and dear to the hearts of The Lonely Island beyond just the hilarity of turtle sex. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (which our own Vince Mancini has described as “the best mockumentary since Spinal Tap,” by the way) also costars their tortoise friend named “Maximus.”

Just one more reason to go see Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping when it comes out on Friday, June 3. Won’t you do it for the turtles?
