Wonky Mr. Potato Head Is Here To Teach Us About Ugly Food

Two days ago, we told you about a petition urging Walmart to start selling ugly produce. Today we’re bringing you a slightly more creative way to change our current food waste epidemic. Massive toy company Hasbro has teamed up with U.K. supermarket ASDA to create and auction away a Wonky Mr. Potato Head. The two companies hope their unique strategy will raise awareness about food waste. An eBay auction for Wonky Mr. Potato Head is live for another two days and all funds raised by the auction will be donated to surplus food distribution charity, FareShare.

According to the item’s description on eBay, this Limited Edition Wonky Mr. Potato Head will be available until 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 3. Every cent raised will be donated to FareShare, who work hard to tackle food waste and hunger. The description notes that just £1 means they can provide enough food to make four meals for “vulnerable and hungry men, women, and children here in the UK!”

As the issue of food waste continues to grow around the world, many supermarkets are fighting to balance the scales. But progress is slow, particularly in the United States, where we waste about 40 percent of our food, much of that before it ever hits the shelves. While it’s encouraging to see pilot programs in stores like Whole Foods, in order to have a real change, it’s important to focus our efforts on the companies that can really make an impact. This petition to Walmart is certainly a good start, but we need to make stores like Daily Table and WeFood the rule, not the exception.
